Bodies in Business

Bodies in Business (BIB) came into being in 1998 when Paul repeatedly saw patients return to the clinic with similar pain and restriction. Going into their workplaces demonstrated that the stresses and strains associated with poor use of badly designed workspaces were directly impacting negatively on their bodies.

Over the last 10 years BIB has assisted a number of clients and businesses to improve their ergonomic awareness by providing assessment, training and consulting on this interesting division of injury management and prevention. BIB continues to provide affordable, thorough and comprehensive ergonomics services to the Sydney metropolitan area.

BIB has an integrated philosophy that is sensitive to both the needs of the employee but take into consideration the economic pressures that businesses face. We endeavour to find effective and low cost solutions to issues surrounding the ergonomics of workplaces and have a comprehensive knowledge of products and suppliers to optimise competitiveness in the market place. We place education and training above purchasing so that the ergonomic experience is one of learning and empowerment for both the individual and the organisation.

All of our work is evidence-based and supported with current ergonomics research and the OH&S standards of Australia and internationally recognised standards organisations.

How can you benefit from the Bodies in Business approach to ergonomics?

Developing an ergonomic strategy within an organisation may involve some small initial costs but there is an increasing body of evidence that endorses such an implementation as an investment in the biggest resource of any organisation – the employees. Several pieces of research also show that ergonomics provision benefits the organisation in the following areas:

  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Reduced injury and long-term sick rates
  • Lower compensation claims
  • Improved staff morale
  • Improved staff recruitment and retention
  • Improved work efficiency and productivity

With increasingly robust Health and Safety legislation being enforced, the inclusion of an ergonomics strategy also helps to maximise organisational compliance to these laws.

What is the relevance to Physiotherapy ?

Physiotherapists have become interested in the field of ergonomics due to the positive impact it has had on injury prevention. Placed into the context of available data on the prevalence of musculoskeletal problems in the workplace, it is important that Physiotherapists have a comprehensive knowledge of how best to manage, advise and indeed prevent work-related injuries.

A unique merger of skills

The Physiotherapists at Essential Health Plus have integrated their physiotherapy and ergonomics knowledge to provide a unique and comprehensive approach to assessing both their patients in the clinic, and individuals in work-related settings. Application of biomechanics, anthropometrics and an understanding of the mechanisms of work-related injury, make us well placed to provide a service that cannot be attained by non-medical personnel, who may have only very basic training in the ‘guidelines for workstation set-up’.

Employees being assessed by BIB Consultants also get the benefit of receiving Physiotherapy related advice related specifically to the management of their musculoskeletal conditions during the course of their assessment.
